2003 European GP Podium
This is part 5 of the European Grand Prix mini history series - years 2001 - 2003.
The 2001 European GP is best remembered for Schumi vs Schumi at the race start. The big brother Michael grabbed the pole from his little brother Ralf , Juan Pablo Montoya was on P3. At the race start Michael felt aseep a tiny bit and to defend his lead Michael Schumacher pushed his brother way too close to the wall. Ralf had only 2 options - either to hit the wall or lift his foot off the throttle. He chose the throttle action and as a result Michael Schumacher kept his lead, Ralf stayed in second. Ferrari’s Bridgestones worked better early on and Michael pulled away. Soon however the advantage turned to Michelins. Ralf was pushing his brother hard and Montoya was closing on both of them.

Earlier this week Red Bull and Toro Rosso took their show cars for a ride alongside Lake Balaton in Hungary. Red Bull’s test driver Sebastien Buemi drove the Red Bull car, Toro Rosso’s team boss Gerhard Berger drove the Toro Rosso. Here is the video:

The future of the Formula 1 race at Silverstone remains very much in doubt, but 2 things are certain. This is the venue of the first ever Formula 1 race back in 1950, and this will be the venue of British Formula 1 Grand Prix this coming weekend
.
Most of the teams sound confident following last week’s test at the same track but the fight for the win will likely be between Ferrari and McLaren. Felipe Massa will start the race as a championship leader for the first time in his career. Kimi Raikkonen won here last year and his Ferrari will be fitted with a fresh engine for this race following his troubles in France. Lewis Hamilton claimed pole position at Silverstone in 2007, the race however did not go that well for him. He dropped back behind both Raikkonen and Alonso after not setting up his car too well for the race. As this is his home race he may fuel light for the qualifying and go for pole position glory. But with high per lap fuel consumption at Silverstone going too light may compromise his race. Heikki Kovalainen will want to build on his solid race performance 2 weeks ago…

It was Monaco GP for Formula 1 fans yesterday. Across the Atlantic it was the day of another classic race - the 92th Indianapolis 500. I watched the race for a while from around lap 46 to lap 100. Most of that time the race was behind the pace car and pretty much nothing was happening, except those crashes that caused all the pace car intervals. So if someone asks me how I feel about the race, I would say pretty boring procession, because that’s about all I could see during those 50 something laps I watched
. But while the cars were actually racing I was wondering, what is more mad. Racing at these high speeds so close to the walls of the oval track, or racing F1 cars in Monaco…
Some exciting moments apparently followed after I went to sleep. Marco Andretti helping his teammate Tony Kanaan to crash out of the race, or the pitlane incident between Danica Patrick and Ryan Briscoe (video inside the post). As Formula One fan I was jelaous seeing the massive 33 car grid (although all looking the same) and then … the huge crowd. I think I heard 350,000 people on TV but I may not be correct.
The race was won by Scott Dixon from New Zealand who spent more than half of the race in the lead (115 laps our of 200). Two former F1 drivers took part in the race - Enrique Bernoldi and Justin Wilson as well ex-GP2 driver Ernesto Viso (perhaps best remembered for his spectatular crash in Magny Cours last year).

Monaco Grand Prix is a special event. If I ever doubted it I do not any more after going to see the race last year (my pictures are here). The special GP needs some special treatment also here, so I beging the Monaco GP countdown with some videos. Here is one, Ayrton Senna’s pole position lap in 1991:

I know that all the teams are driven by the desire to get those few tenths that make the difference between F1 heroes and F1 zeros. But this is what happens when the teams continue fine tuning the ugly additions to their bodyworks, the ugly Dumbo wings get even uglier…

Yesterday I watched few videos from older Monaco races. Here is a clip from 1996, the famous wet race win for Olivier Panis in Ligier. How much nicer the cars were then, 12 years ago …
Even the new A1GP car looks better than the current F1 cars … The only light at the end of the tunnels is the fact, that what we see now is the end of the line for the current F1 cars and 2009 will put an end to these ugly winglets and wings and ears and all this. Season 2009 can’t come soon enough …
