It all went Massa’s way until 3 laps to go. After overtaking both McLarens at the start of the race Massa controlled the Hungarian GP. Hamilton’s tyre failure seemed to have sealed Massa’s win. The unusual Ferrari engine failure with 3 laps to however handed the race win to Heikki Kovalainen. Same as Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button in the recent past, Kovalainen became yet another driver to score his maiden win at the Hungaroring. Timo Glock fended off late challenge from Kimi Raikkonen and held on to fully deserved 2nd place and his own maiden F1 podium. Kimi Raikkonen spent most of the race stuck behind Fernando Alonso but managed to get ahead of him after the last pit stop. He closed down on Timo Glock but after Massa’s engine went in fumes Kimi backed down and cruised to the finish line in 3rd.
The talking point of the race however will likely be several fiery refueling incidents. Barrichello, Nakajima and Bourdais all had their pit stops spiced up by flames and even one of Glock’s pit stops was delayed because problems with the refueling rig …

McLarens confirmed their strong form from free practice sessions and booked the front row all for themselves. Lewis Hamilton will start the Hungarian GP from pole position for the second time in a row, Heikki Kovalainen will line up next to him.
Felipe Massa blamed traffic on his outlap for the slower pace. But after rather week showing on Friday afternoon and this morning the Ferrari, at least Massa’s, seems to be on the pace. Robert Kubica was only about a tenth slower then Massa. Toyota’s package looks strong in Hungary, both their cars made it to top 10, Glock P5 and Trulli P9. Nelson Piquet was again outqualified by his team mate Alonso, but he made it to Q3 and I suspect he is rather heavily fueled. Mark Webber, te usual member of Q3 club, claimed P8.

Lewis Hamilton managed to overcome apparent strategy blunder and won the 2008 German GP at Hockenheim. Nelson Piquet climbed up to the podium for the first time in his F1 career scoring also the first podium of the season for Renault. Felipe Massa finished 3rd. First time since 1991 Belgian GP (when Senna won and Piquet sr. finished 3rd) there were 2 Brazilian drivers on podium .
The race was affected by safety car following Timo Glock’s violent crash. Glock looked a bit shaken after the crash but seems to be OK.

Lewis Hamilton has won his (eventful) home Grand Prix after taking full advantage of his great start and some very strange tyre decision by Raikkonen’s camp. Nick Heidfeld brought his BMW Sauber home in 2nd place. The Ross Brawn factor came to effect in tricky wet / extreme wet conditions. Right choice of tyres in right time and Rubens Barrichello claimed his first podium since joining Honda … They must have missed Brawn at Ferrari today …

Felipe Massa will start the Turkish GP from pole position, as predicted by many people on this site
. His neighbour on front row will be Heikki Kovalainen. Lewis Hamilton and Kimi Raikkonen will line up on second row. There are suggestions that Kimi might have been slowed down by Alonso… I haven’t seen that, will have to wait for more on that. Both Red Bulls made it to Q3 for the first time this season.
This was another disapointing day for Nelson Piquet … Getting out after Q1 is not what Flavio Briatore signed him for …

Kimi Raikkonen won his second race of 2008 season ahead of his team mate Felipe Massa. Lewis Hamilton returned to podium for the first time since Australian GP. Jenson Button scored first points of the season for Honda. Only 13 cars made it to the finish in a race that featured 2 safety car periods and a scary looking Kovalainen’s heavy crash. Fernando Alonso’s hopes for good result were cut short by a spectacular engine failure.
