Not much worth mentioning happened in the first session. Ferraris were the fastest cars - the one with the shark fin - Felipe Massa - was faster than the one without the fin - Kimi Raikkonen. Kovalainen and Hamilton lined up right behind the red cars. Renaults, Toyotas and BMW Saubers filled up the rest of top 10. Trulli did a bit of donut dancing after going wide, Vettel stopped early with mechanical problems. Some drivers complained about no grip - Rosberg, Piquet, some were happy with the grip - Kubica… It was a bit hard to follow this session online with ITV feed being about 12 mins behind the real time action …

Heikki Kovalainen was fastest in the final practice session at Hockenheim, 0.07s ahead of Felipe Massa. As usual BMW Saubers did not show much speed in this session, Robert Kubica however seems to have had some technical problems. He did not run at all in final 10 minutes. This final practice session was dry but there are chances of rain for qualifying. You can follow the weather conditions at the track via this webcam.

The morning session started on wet track but later on the teams were able to switch to dry weather tyres. Hamilton and Kovalainen finished the session on top ahead of Massa. The only notable incident was Kubica’s crash.
The second practice took part in dry conditions. Lewis Hamilton was again the qucikest guy on track ahead of both Ferraris and Heikki Kovalainen.

Wet and dry Saturday practice produced some confusing times. Alonso ended up on top ahead of Webber and Kovalainen. It is hard to tell if these times mean anything at all …

Felipe Massa crashed heavily into the tyre wall after spinning off the track. It looks like the cause was some oil dropped by Alonso after his engine failed at the same place a while earlier. The sesion was red flagged to deal with the debris but Massa walked away OK.
It is very close between Ferrari and McLaren. Despite his crash Massa remained at the top of the timesheets after P1, but Kovailainen was only 0.012s and Hamilton 0.048s behind … Raikkonen, Kubica, both Renaults, Vettel, Coulthard and Rosberg were the others in top 10.
Massa’s car has benn fixed and he could take part in the later part of the practice 2. P2 was dominated by McLaren and Red Bull. Heikki Kovalainen posted the fastest time ahead of Mark Webber, Lewis Hamilton and David Couthard. Ferraris did not do too well. But Raikkonen looked like being on different program than the P2 front runners and Massa’s slower times might have had somethung to do with his later entry into the session.

This looked like one of the sessions where the top drivers did not put their top speeds on display. The top spot went to Renault again - this time to Nelson Piquet. Renault do seem to have good package for their home Grand Prix … Vettel also continued to impress with 3rd place just behind Mark Webber of Red Bull proper. Eighteen drivers were separated by less than a second, only Force India cars lagged behind a bit more. It looks like we may have very interesting qualifying. The Q2 will be very interesting but already getting out of Q1 will not be easy …
