Formula 1 – 1989 Liveries

The F1 Livery History is back with season 1989. The last season of the 80s and the first one in the post turbo era featured 20 teams. Onyx was the only new team on the grid, Brabham name returned after one year absence. It was to be the last season for Zakspeed (see the tobacco free East variation of their original West livery). Euro Brun failed to qualify for a single race that season, but at least they made the 1989 line up more colourful by changing their livery midway through the season (reflecting the Jagermeister sponsorship).

Formula 1 – 1990 Liveries

It is time for another post in the F1 Livery History series. Here is the final episode of the 90s – season 1990. There were 19 teams on the grid that year and one of them – Coloni – even managed to get classified twice – in 19th as Coloni-Subaru and 18th place as Coloni-Ford *. This F1 season was the only one for Life F1 team. Interesting fact – one of the AGS drivers back in 1990 (and in 1989 and 1991) was the 2009 WTCC champion Gabriele Tarquini.

Formula 1 – 1991 Liveries

It has been a while since the last F1 Liveries History post but the regular off-season feature is back with the look back at the F1 liveries of 1991 season. This was the year when Jordan joined the F1 circus and Michael Schumacher entered the scene (Jordan, Benetton). Eigteen teams, nine different engine suppliers, two tyre brands made up very colourful grid…

Liveries – 15 years of McLaren Mercedes F1 partnership

Although the Mercedes engines will power the McLaren F1 cars for few years to come (the new deal says 2015 at least) their privileged partnership is coming to an end. Following the takeover of Brawn GP Mercedes will run their own team and McLaren will turn into a customer. Let’s look back at the images of Mercedes powered McLaren since 1995:

Formula 1 – 1992 Liveries

The off-season is slowly coming to an end, the F1 racing returns next weekend. Before the action begins here is another look back to the history of F1 liveries – year 1992 – the year when Nigel Mansell won the drivers’ title with Williams. He also won the first 5 races of the season – imagine if someone manages that this year with the new wins above points rule

Formula 1 – 1994 Liveries

The F1 Liveries History is back with year 1994. The year of tragic San Marino GP, the year when Michael Schumacher won his first title, the year when David Coulthard made his F1 debut.

Two new teams arrived in 1994 – Simtec and Pacific. McLaren switched from Ford to Peugeot engines (before turning to Mercedes in 1995). This was the last F1 season for Lotus and Larrousse. In total there were 14 teams on the grid in 1994.

After few weeks break here is another part of the F1 Liveries History post. This time year 1995 when 13 teams entered (although Simtek did not last for too long) and 37 different drivers started races. Forti was the new team on the grid, Jordan was yet to get the Benson&Hedges on board, and there was also MTV car :-) .

Formula 1 – 1996 Liveries – End of era

The Formula 1 liveries are back with season 1996. Season 1996 – Jacques Villeneuve arrived in F1 and Williams dominated the field with the champion Damon Hill starting from the front row in every single race.

The look of the grid was so much different than a year later in 1997 … This was the last season of the iconic Marlboro dominated red and white McLaren livery, Jordan was on the way to turn yellow but in their first Benson & Hedges season painted their cars gold to match the colour of the ciggy boxes. Benetton changed several logos on their sidepods and also took Kingfisher on board – the first time Vijay Mallya got himself involved in F1. Arrows was called Footwork that year and Forti although folding after 10 races still managed to run 2 very different liveries. The green one was to signal the life saving sponsorship deal with Shannon Racing that however later went sour. This was also the last season for Ligier before Alain Prost turned it into Prost.

Well, and Ferrari car looked rather funny and quite different from the others back then in 1996. But for the first time they had Michael Schumacher in the cockpit…

Formula 1 – 1997 Liveries

The F1 liveries of the past are back – this is year 1997. The year when Williams were the dominant force, the year when Marlboro moved from McLaren to Ferrari. The McLarens turned silver/black, the barcode appeared on Ferrari cars for the first time. The variety of all the sponsors seems to have been much bigger back then, not too many of those are involved in F1 these days. And look at the variety of engines -Ferrari, Mercedes, Ford, Renault, Peugeot, Yamaha, Honda, Hart…

Update: I totally forgot about the MasterCard Lola … Added the livery to the bottom of the post

Formula 1 – 1998 Liveries

Here come the liveries of 1998 Formula 1 season, the next part of the F1 Liveries History series of posts. The look of the 1998 grid was quite similar to season 1999. The biggest difference – Tyrrell was yet to turn into BAR, Arrows was yet to turn orange and Minardi had more Williams like look than Williams car itself :-) .  I must say the cars looked quite neat back then although that front wing and long nose on Prost is a bit funny. And that Jordan rocked …

Season 1998 was also the season when the grooved tyres arrived
