Fernando Alonso won the 2010 Bahrain GP, winning his first race in Ferrari colours. Felipe Massa finished second and completed 1-2 for Ferrari. Lewis Hamilton took the final podium place. Pole setter Sebastian Vettel battled with mechanical problems but still managed to finish fourth ahead of Mercedes GP duo Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher. Button, Webber, Liuzzi and Barrichello took the remaining point scoring places.

Lotus Racing - The only one of the new teams that finished the race

It was good day for Lotus with both cars finishing the race although it was quite close for Trulli who stopped on the slow down lap. None of the other new teams managed to bring a car to the finish. Chandhok crashed out on lap 2 after hitting a bump on the track, di Grassi retired a lap later. Glock stopped on lap 17 and Bruno Senna’s engine blew up a lap later.

2010 Formula One Team Logos

Here is another regular start of the season feature – look at all the logos of Formula One teams. Lot’s of changes compared to the year 2009 (see 2009 F1 logos here). Gone are the Toyota and Brawn GP logos. We have four brand new logos instead – Mercedes GP, Virgin, Lotus and Hispania. Then there is the BMW logo missing in BMW Sauber logo following BMWs pull out from F1 as well as the ING brand missing from Renault F1 logo.

The one thing the 2010 and 2009 logo collections seem to have in common is that the last team to make the grid (Brawn GP and Hispania) had the least time to work on their branding or it was very low on their list of priorities (understandably). The result reflects that .

Top three in 2010 Bahrain GP qualifying

Sebastian Vettel will start the 2010 Bahrain GP from the pole position. Felipe Massa will line up next to him on the front row. P3 belongs to Alonso, P4 to Hamilton. Then go Rosberg, Webber, Schumacher, Button, Kubica and Sutil. The top 10 will have to start the race with same tyres with which they qualified in Q3. The only driver in top 10 to have qualified on harder compound tyre is Adrian Sutil.

Fastest lap in the Q2 belongs to Sebastian Vettel – 1:53.883, ahead of Fernando Alonso – 1:54.172. Hamilton, Rosberg, Schumacher, Webber, Massa, Kubica and Sutil also made it to Q1. The last driver to make the cut was Jenson Button.

Fastest driver in Q1 was Fernando Alonso. Karun Chandhok was finally able to take part in the qualifying. Inevitably he finished last but both HRT cars did rather well considering the circumstances. The fastest of the new team drivers was Timo Glock in Virgin, only 1.6 secs behind the slowest of the “old” teams drivers – Jaime Alguesuari (and remember that Bahrain lap is very long).

Adrian Sutil, fastest in the morning session

The 2010 F1 season kicked off today with the Friday practice. Fastets time of the morning session belongs to Adrian Sutil in Force India car ahead of Alonso, Kubica, Massa and Button. We will only find out later this weekend what these times mean … At the other end of the time sheets are as expected the new teams.

With less than 20 minutes to left in P1 Bruno Senna and HRT made their debut appearance in F1. He returned for one more run at the very end of the session and was about 10 seconds off the pace at the second sector time before returning to the garage. Karun Chandhok’s car was not ready for FP1.

Nico Rosberg was the fastest driver in afternoon practice session ahead of Hamilton and Schumacher. At the back Lotus clocked about a second faster times than Virgin. Bruno Senna was the only HRT driver in action. He did 17 laps. His best lap was the last one, 4.8 secs slower than Lucas di Grassi in Virgin (just before his rear wheel nut came off).

2010 Bahrain GP – Friday Practice

The first race weekend of 2010 F1 season is here, it is time for the round one of 2010 Prediction Game. We have several new drivers, new teams, in fact more teams and drivers than we have had for very long time. We have new team mate rivalries, we also have four world champions on the grid. Predicting the outcome of the first race is never easy. This year the new rules made the predictions even more difficult. Unlike last year no clear favourite for early season wins emerged after the winter testing although Ferrari, Red Bull, McLaren and Mercedes are expected to lead the pack. We may get a bit clearer picture after the practice sessions on Friday and Saturday …

The season kicks of in Bahrain where hot and dry weather is expected. This year Bahrain GP will be run on longer configuration track than previously. Slow twisty section (between turns 4 to 14 – see diagram) was added. Obviously as result we will not be able to compare the lap times with those recorder in the past. The new Bahrain lap is 6.299km/3.914 miles long. The race length is 49 laps (308.405km/191.642 miles).

2010 Bahrain GP starts on Sunday March 14 at 15:00 local time (12:00 GMT, 20:00 Hong Kong).

The predictions have to be placed before the start of the qualifying session (Saturday March 13, 14:00 local time, 11:00 GMT, 19:00 Hong Kong). Remember – this year we are predicting top 10, pole position and fastest lap ! Predictions can be changed, amended, there is no limit on the number of changes as long as they are made before the start of the qualifying. Some Bahrain GP predictions were already placed under the Champion Prediction post – I moved them all here for the sake of better orientation .

2010 Virgin Racing Livery

Here is the final part of the pre-season miniseries of post recapping the changes in Formula One.

Drivers

There were no drivers changes during the 2008 F1 season (other than the seats lost following the demise of Super Aguri) and the only changes in drivers line up ahead of 2009 were related to the retirement of David Coulthard. Vettel moved from Toro Rosso to Red Bull, Sebastien Buemi took Vettel’s seat at Toro Rosso. Buemi was also the only rookie on the grid of the season opening Australian GP last March. What a difference a year makes…

Vettel, Webber, Hamilton, Buemi, Alguersuari, Liuzzi and Sutil are that will appear in Bahrain in the same colours as they did in Abu Dhabi last year. The only other driver who kept his seast is Felipe Massa (missed half of 2009 season after his Hungarian GP accident).

The 2010 season will start with 5 rookies – Hulkenberg, Petrov, Chandhok, Senna and di Grassi. At the same time we have Michael Schumacher coming out of his retirement and Pedro de la Rosa returning to proper racing after 7 years of test of test driving duties for McLaren and for the first time since his stand-in racing appearance in 2006 Hungarian GP.

And to complete the statistics – 9 drivers moved to new teams (Rosberg, Button, Alonso, Barrichello, Kubica, Glock, Trulli, Kovalainen and Kobayashi) and 5 drivers that raced in 2009 season finale failed to secure race drives for 2010 (Heidfeld, Fisichella, Grosjean, Raikkonen and Nakajima).

Teams

The post 2009 season earthquake was not limited to drivers only. Several manufacturers called it a day. BMW and Toyota left F1 taking with them also their engines. Renault sold big chunk of the team to Genii Capital leaving not much more that the company name (and colours) with the F1 team. On the other hand Mercedes bought the Brawn GP team from Ross Brawn and company while selling their stake in McLaren. Toro Rosso became a constructor proper building the car themselves for the first time since the Minardi purchase (although the car still looks very much like the Red Bull proper).

Sauber team managed to survive the BMW pull out and will race in 2010 season with BMW in the name but Ferrari engines at the back of their cars. Williams ditched Toyota power even before the Japanese car maker announced their withdrawal from F1 and switched to Cosworth engines.

Virgin Racing (formerly known as Manor GP), HRT F1 (Hispania Racing, formerly known as Campos META) and Lotus Racing are three of the four new teams that managed to build the cars and are likely to appear in Bahrain.

Engines

There will only be 4 engine suppliers represented in F1 in 2010. Ferrari, Mercedes, Renault remain, Cosworth has returned. BMW and Toyota are gone …

Liveries

Ferrari, McLaren, Red Bull, Toro Rosso, Force India and Williams continue with looks very similar to the ones we remember from 2009 season. BMW Sauber ditched the BMW blue and replaced it with black. Renault while no longer Renault owned returned to Renault corporate yellow/black colour scheme. Mercedes GP replaced the Brawn GP colours with silver. And then of course there are the new teams with some more and some less exciting liveries – see all 2010 liveries here.

2010 F1 Season – What is new – Part 3 – Cast and characters

FIA published the (almost) final version of 2010 F1 entry list. The most important information the list provides is that there will be only 12 teams on the grid this season. USF1 failed to get ready and FIA decided that it is too late for any other team to enter the championship (see the statement at the end of this post). The entry list also confirms the name change of Campos META team to HRT F1 Team while BMW remains attached to the name of now Ferrari powered Sauber team. The only piece of the puzzle left to filled is the name Bruno Senna’s team mate. The announcement from HRT is expected later today with Indian driver Karun Chandhok said to be the prime candidate for that seat. We can also see that the ex-BAR, ex-Honda, ex-Brawn GP Brackley based Mercedes GP will now race under German flag. So in case McLaren or Mercedes GP drivers win the race we will only hear one national anthem …

FIA statement regarding team entries into the 2010 FIA Formula One World Championship.

The USF1 Team have indicated that they will not be in a position to participate in the 2010 FIA Formula One World Championship. Having considered the various options, the FIA confirms that it is not possible for a replacement team to be entered for the Championship at this late stage.

In the coming days the FIA will announce details of a new selection process to identify candidates to fill any vacancies existing at the start of the 2011 season.

The FIA statement is an indication that there will be new selection process for 2011. That may not the kind of news Ken Anderson wanted to hear …

Official 2010 F1 Entry list – 12 teams only …

Here comes the second part of the miniseries looking at the new face of Formula One. Part one looked at the new races and new tracks, part two is about the rules. Here is the overview of the most significant and obvious rule changes:

Points

There is a major change in the F1 points system to reflect the increased number of teams on the grid as well as give some incentive to overtake rather then settle for safe points. The old 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 system is replaced with 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1. Top ten drivers instead of top eight will get points. We need to wait and see whether this change achieves what it was designed to achieve. What we can sure about is its impact on the historical statistics, it will mess them up …

Refueling

The change that will have the biggest impact on racing this year is the ban on refueling during the race. The fact that cars will start races with full fuel tanks (or full enough to last the race distance) is also reflected in the changes to Q3 qualifying – no more race fuel qualifying but low fuel flying laps. This is likely to result in the fastest rather than the lightest car on the pole position. In theory the fastest car should run away right after the start. But the drivers will have much heavier cars to handle at the start of the race than in the qualifying. The car quickest on empty tank may not be the fastest when fully fueled. The other important factor is that at the start of the race each car which took part in Q3 must be fitted with the tyres with which the driver set his grid time. The tyre that wins on Saturday may not be the tyre that wins on Sunday… Tyre management and fuel efficiency will be much more important than in the previous seasons. We can expect the cars only to make one pit stop for the compulsory tyre change (prime vs. option), we can also expect the pit stops to be much faster without the need to refuel.

I also can’t wait to see how many teams will dare to gamble on safety cars in Monaco, Montreal, Singapore (or when rain is predicted for the race) and fuel lightly expecting to save fuel behind the safety car …

Qualifying

As mentioned above the main change in qualifying format is related to the refueling ban. Q3 will no longer be run with race fuel load but same as Q1 and Q2 with any fuel load considered right for the best qualifying time.

The number of cars that will be eliminated in each part of qualifying will be bigger than last year as there are more teams on the grid. We still do not know how many. But the simple formula is X = (Y-10)/2 where Y is the total number of cars competing this season, be it 22, 24 or 26, and X is the number of cars eliminated in Q1 and Q2. Same as in the past years ten fastest in Q2 will make it to Q1.

2010 Winter Testing – Barcelona February 26 – With images

It is twenty days to go before the first race of 2010 season. That is less than the gaps between Chinese and Spanish GPs or Hungarian and German GPs later on this season.

There were no more drivers confirmed in past 10 days. On the contrary the seats of Bruno Senna and Jose Maria Lopez may be in jeopardy. The presence of Campos Meta in Bahrain (possibly under different name) is now more likely following the takeover of the team by Jose Ramon Carabante and appointment of Colin Kolles as team principal. Whether it also means job security for Bruno Senna is not clear yet. The team is openly looking for pay drivers to help to fund the team.

USF1 made it clear they will not make it to Bahrain. Ken Anderson admitted the US based team is discussing with FIA the possibility to miss first 4 races of the season in desperate attempt to buy some time. Hard to see why would FIA allow something like that with no guarantee the team would actually show up for Spanish GP. Anderson also said that J.M.Lopez is considering his options.

Stefan GP meanwhile keeps getting ready to step in. They fired up the ex-Toyota engine in the ex-Toyota car and plan to test probably with ex-Toyota F1 boy Kazuki Nakajima in Algarve later this month (if they find some tyres to put on). It however looks very likely that the only way to see 13 teams to line up on Bahrain grid is Stefan GP buying the entry from USF1 …

The other two new teams are out and testing. Lotus Racing unveiled their car and managed some serious mileage in Jerez last week. (Lotus livery was also voted the best 2010 F1 livery by readers here at F1Wolf.com). Virgin Racing is also alive and kicking although they are loosing some valuable testing time and mileage trying to solve their hydraulic issues.

The weather was not too kind to the teams this winter but at least the final two days in Jerez provided the opportunity to get some proper running on dry track. The test times aren’t revealing much about the form of the teams but the common view seems to be that Ferrari may have the strongest package at the moment.

The 2010 season countdown will return with its last episode in 10 days. By then the pre-season testing will be over (Barcelona test is scheduled for 25-28 February) and hopefully we will also know what are FIA plans with USF1 and Stefan GP.
