2008 Bahrain Formula 1 GP – Friday Free Practice

Hamilton Bahrain 2008Ferrari dominated the Friday sessions in Bahrain with Felipe Massa ahead of Kimi Raikkonen both in the morning and in the afternoon. Just before the end of P2 Massa did the best lap of the day, the only lap below 1:32s.

Today was a good day for Williams. Rosberg was 3rd fastest in P1 and 6th in P2, Nakajima not too far behind. The headache of Sepang seems to be over.

McLarens were quite a bit off the pace of Ferrari today. Then in P2, just when the times started to get quicker, Hamilton crashed. He hit the wall pretty hard and damaged the car. He did not get a chance to go for the quick run as most of the other drivers. Hamilton ended the P2 in 4th place, half a second behind Kimi, almost one and half second behind Massa.

Kubica was faster of the 2 BMW Sauber drivers today, significantly faster. Not sure if Heidfeld was experiencing some problems with the car or was simply on different programme.

It looked to be pretty bad day for Renault, especially in P2. Both cars languished around the bottom of time sheets for most of the session. Then they managed to get their act together and Piquet squeezed into top 10. The midfield is however very crowded and there is not much between 8th and 18th …

Same as today, tomorrow you can also follow the action from Bahrain on Live Blog also here on F1Wolf. The Live Blog will be on for Saturday practice and also for qualifying. You can replay Live Blog from Practice 1 and Practice 2 to see what to expect.

Malaysian F1 GP 2008 – Saturday Practice

Sepang Circuit MapThe final practice session in Malaysia did not make us any smarter. McLarens seem to have played the same game as they did week ago in Australia. They did not get anywhere near top ten. BMW Sauber show again they are a force to be reckoned with. After pretty quiet session Heidfeld stepped on the gass towards the end and clocked the fastest time. One can expect Kubica being able to do the same should he chose to … Ferraris did better than last week in the final practice. It may be a sign of less troubled weekend for them. Massa has been quicker so far but that may have something to do with fuel loads and race strategy.

Toyotas seem well capable of Q3 and points. Button in Honda continued showing strong pace and may also hope for a place in top 10 in qualifying.

Nelson Piquet is doing much better than last week. It may have something to do with the fact that he knows the Sepang track from his A1 racing here. He outpaced Alonso by few tenths …

Malaysian F1 GP 2008 – Friday Practice

Sepang Circuit MapThere were heavy clouds around and above the Sepang track but no rain felt down during the Friday practice. The session 1 was dominated by Felipe Massa (on pole position here last year). The session 2 was all about Ferrari as well until the last few minutes when Lewis Hamilton stole the show.

The reliability problems continued for Ferrari engines – Sebastien Bourdais Ferrari engine expired … Kimi Raikkonen’s car stopped on the track during the practice one, but according to the news reports he simply run out of fuel … The action highlight of the day should probably go to David Coulthard and his suspension failure after hitting the kerbs at Turn 13 during practice 1.

Ferrari and McLaren look like the best packages for the Malaysian GP. But Vettel in Toro Rosso, Button in Honda, Rosberg in Williams, Trulli in Toyota were all impressive at least in one of the sessions. And do not forget BMW Saubers – They did not have the quickest Friday last week in Australia, but once the times started to count on Saturday afternoon, they were right there with McLarens and Ferraris. Red Bulls do not seem to be as comfortable on this track as they were in Melbourne.

Nelson Piquet must be happier than he was in Australia. He pretty much matched Alonso’s times in both sessions. Giancarlo Fisichella impressed again in session 2 with a top 10 time, let’s see if he has more luck that last week during qualifying and the race. The performance gap between him and Adrian Sutil must a bit too big for Sutil’s comfort…

The Friday practice times in the article

Here is a selection of photos I took on Friday, October 5. Kazuki Nakajima drove for Williams in the first session. Nick Heidfeld’s car broke down and he had to change 750 horse power for 4 men power. Rubens Barrichello’s helmet changed color in the afternoon.

Japanese GP – Saturday Practice – Abandoned

Japan Flag
After several delays due to poor visibility, the morning practice finally went ahead only to be abandoned after 4 minutes due to heavy rain. There were only 3 drivers who managed at least 1 flying lap.
Alex Wurz was fastest on a 1:32.746, two seconds ahead of Nico Rosberg and 3.4 seconds ahead of Trulli. The teams will have to work with whatever data they collected on Friday. Not exactly the best way going into the qualifying and race on a brand new track.

Further rain in Fuji F1 track area is predicted for the Japanese F1 weekend.

Formula 1 – Belgian GP – Saturday Practice

Ferrari had the upper hand in the final practice, with Kimi just ahead of Massa. Alonso and Hamilton were few tenths behind. Kovalainen, Trulli and Schumacher did quite well. This was not a good session for Kubica, the strange noises and blue smoke coming out of his BMW could be signs of an engine failure…

The other Ferrari of Felipe Massa did not set any time after going off to gravel at Rivage early on in the session. Liuzzi and Yamamoto were other 2 with some off the track excursions. Nico Rosberg again among the top, squeezed in between 2 BMWs. Two Aguri’s were pretty evenly matched …
