2008 Brazilian F1 GP – Friday Practice

Fernando Alonso, fastest in Brazil on Friday

Fernando Alonso, fastest in Brazil on Friday

The fastest time of the day on the mostly damp track in Brazil went to Fernando Alonso who topped the time sheets in the second free practice. Felipe Massa seems to have the upper hand over hist title rival Lewis Hamilton so far. Massa was quickest in FP1 and second fastest in FP2. Lewis Hamilton ended FP1 right behind Massa but managed only 9th in FP2. But as it is always the case on Fridays it is very hard to read into these times. One should also remember that Lewis Hamilton does not have to go for the win in this race and so his practice program can be more conservative. What can worry Hamilton however are the numerous tyre lock ups he suffered on Sunday. Flatspotting his tyres would not be a good idea in the race on Sunday…

2008 Chinese F1 GP – The Engine Blow Up by Mark Webber

Mark Webber's V8 let's go

Mark Webber's V8 let's go

Mark Webber will drop back 10 places on the starting grid of the Chinese GP in Shanghai due to his unscheduled engine change. The Renault V8 engine in the back of his Red Bull car let go during Saturday morning free practice session. And it was a spectacular blow up as the above picture reveals. Smoke and flames, we do not see that so often in Formula One these days.

2008 Chinese F1 GP – Saturday Practice

Nick Heidfeld was the quickest driver in the morning practice, Kubica 3d, that BMW looks fast. Hamilton split the 2 BMWs with 2nd fastest time. Both Ferraris were rather low in this session as was Fernando Alonso. We will see in 2 hours whether these were cases of sandbagging or problems with the pace.

Lewis Hamilton in this practice ran wide at the pitlane entry, 2007 Shanghai deja vu :-) . Mark Webber’s engine blew up and he already used up his joker it looks like 10 place penalty for the Red Bull driver.

2008 Chinese F1 GP – Friday Practice

Looked like exciting morning in Shanghai with quite some action on the track. Hamilton practiced some overtaking manuevres on Massa, Nelson Piquet jr tried to do “Hamilton” at the pit lane entry gravel trap while Bouradais explored the gravel at different part of the track. The top four places were occupied by McLarens and Ferraris with Hamilton setting the fastest time of the session ahead of Massa. Kubica and Alonso were best of the rest.

2008 Japanese F1 GP – Saturday Practice

Mark Webber 2008 Japanese GP Saturday Practice

Mark Webber 2008 Japanese GP Saturday Practice

The last practice session happened on track still wet from earlier rain. Car started the session on extreme wets but moved on to intermediates later. No green tyres this time. Both Massa and Hamilton did rather well but did not get involved in the last minute quick times dash. The fastest lap went to Robert Kubica ahead of Timo Glock and Nelson Piquet. Not much pace on display from Kimi Raikkonen this time. The track was still quite wet at the end of the session so we may be up for at least damp qualifying … Bottom positions for Honda and Force India. Force India cars spent better part of the session in the garage with some technical issues.

Saturday Free Practice Times:

1. R. Kubica – BMW Sauber – 1:25.087
2. T. Glock – Toyota – 1:25.171
3. N. Piquet – Renault – 1:25.415
4. N. Heidfeld – BMW Sauber – 1:25.474
5. K. Nakajima – Williams – 1:25.056
6. D. Coulthard – Red Bull – 1:25.614
7. F. Massa – Ferrari – 1:25.709
