Statement from Ferrari on Felipe Massa’s condition

Message to Felipe from his crew

Ferrari team issued statement on the condition of Felipe Massa who crashed heavily after being struck by a piece of flying debris from another car during the qualifying for Hungarian GP:

“After the accident during the qualifying session of the Grand Prix of Hungary, Felipe Massa was airlifted to the AEK hospital in Budapest. Felipe was conscious at the arrival at the hospital and his general conditions remain stable.

Following a complete medical examination it emerged that he had suffered a cut on his forehead, a bone damage of his skull and a brain concussion. These conditions need to be operated on after which he will remain under observation in intensive care.”

Not surprisingly he will not take part in the Hungarian GP tomorrow.

Let’s hope Felipe Massa will recover soon.

Update: Felipe Massa has undergone successful surgery at the AEK hospital in Budapest. He will now remain under observation in the intensive care unit.

2009 Hungarian GP – Friday Practice

The Hungarian GP weekend kicked off with Friday practice. Busiest driver in the morning session was (as expected) the rookie Jaime Alguersuari with 42 laps to his name. He did reasonably well on his first proper F1 outing, setting time only 2 tenths slower than his team mate Sebastien Buemi. The fastest lap of the sesson belongs to Heikki Kovalainen. Nico Rosberg was second fastest and Lewis Hamilton third.

Sebastien Vettel complained about tyres heating up too much, Brawn GP spent the session testing new aero parts and running with race fuel loads.

Video – On Singapore GP and more

Does not happen too often that I find F1 related video contents on our local news website. But here is one from SCMP.com featuring Singapore GP and some men behind it as well some thoughts from ESPN Star Sport’s Steve Slater on Singapore GP and on F1 in general that include another gem (this time actually a funny one I think): “Is it going to be Formula One or Formula the other one ?” :-) .

Le Seb's F1 career with Toro Rosso came to an end ...

So, it is official now. Sebastien Bourdais’ F1 career with Scuderia Toro Rosso is over. The team has decided to bring new driver for Hungarian GP. Franz Tost:

“In Sébastien’s second year with us, the partnership has not met our expectations and therefore we have decided to replace him as from the next round of the World Championship, the Hungarian Grand Prix.”

And so Sébastien Bourdais becomes the first driver since Scott Speed in 2007 to be dropped by the team during the season (if we do not count Alex Wurz who dropped himself and retired the same year with a race to go). He also joins the privileged company of Juan Pablo Montoya, Jacques Villeneuve and others – the drivers whos F1 seasons or careers ended in July
