2010 Winter Testing – Jerez February 11 – with images

The 2010 winter testing continues with the second day of action in Jerez. The weather is expected to be a bit better than on Wednesday. Michael Schumacher and Robert Kubica will replace Nico Rosberg and Vitaly Petrov today, the other eight teams will continue with same drivers as yesterday.The drivers in action today are:

    Interesting. Ferrari which completely dominated the first round of testing is now well off pace. I guess we wait for Bahrain in 28 days.

    well, Kobayashi’s fastest lap came in his final run and it is very likely there was not much fuel in the tank of that Sauber that time. the times do not mean much, the difference between full and empty tank this year is 160kg, that alone can make difference as much as 5 secs a lap … it seriously difficult to make any conclusions at all from the lap times during these test at least until we get to the stage when more the teams will go for some low fuel qualifying run simulations at the same day on the same track. may not see that till the final day of the final test

    We said that last year when Brawn showed up faster than everyone…and they were. I do find it hard to believe that Toro Rosso is a front runner.

    What about the Cosworth engine…any talk about their power and reliability. That could be the biggest wild card for 2010.

    By the way, these are awesome pictures. You can see a lot of detail in each car. It looks like some teams (Ferrari, McLaren, Brawn) have put a lot of effort into the nose up to the driver cockpit. Also, are those antenna’s sticking up just aft of the drivers. Ferrari and McLaren have huge very tall extensions. Is this part of the car or for testing only?

    We said that last year when Brawn showed up faster than everyone…and they were. I do find it hard to believe that Toro Rosso is a front runner.

    Last year at the beginning there was also some talk whether Brawn GP car is really that fast or whether they are just showing off to attract sponsorship. It took a while for the doubts to disappear. Also remember that 2009 cars had much smaller fuel tanks and the difference between running on fumes and running with full tank was only somewhere around 2.5 secs.

    What about the Cosworth engine…any talk about their power and reliability. That could be the biggest wild card for 2010.

    Only Williams and Virgin took the Cosworth engines to the track so far. Virgin only did 16 laps so far, too little to judge reliability of the engine. And Williams drivers are said to be be rather conservative with the use of the engine at this stage of their testing program. So hard to tell how reliable/unreliable the engines are at this moment.

    The rules have changed significantly each of the past couple years, which leaves us all guessing as to who has the better cars. Now that we are two sessions into the testing, what are your thoughts? Who are the teams to beat? Any teams that have jumped up the ladder? Who looks like they have fallen behind?

    I have serious concerns about our home grown USF1 team. They still have only one driver (and not a very good one at that) and no car unveiling or firm schedule for testing. Are they going to make the first race?
