Formula 1 – 1991 Liveries

It has been a while since the last F1 Liveries History post but the regular off-season feature is back with the look back at the F1 liveries of 1991 season. This was the year when Jordan joined the F1 circus and Michael Schumacher entered the scene (Jordan, Benetton). Eigteen teams, nine different engine suppliers, two tyre brands made up very colourful grid…

    The McLaren looks the best!

Wish the grid was this diverse for 2010.

It will not be that diverse in 2010 but 13 teams is more than 10 :-) And perhaps it will be more colourful now when the boring Toyota and BMW liveries are gone :-)

  2. Nice look back at some of the old liveries ;) I must be honest I hate those old Ferraris with black on. I think my least favourite F1 car of all time is the ‘96 Ferrari. In 1991 the McLaren is undoubtedly the best though.

Is the Minardi picture correct since it says Minardi – Ferrari but the picture cklearly says Lamborghini?

Obviously that was the wrong picture showing 1992 car :-)   fixed it now. Thanks !

With Mercedes (Brawn F1) running next season with Michael Schumacher quoted as saying ” It will be great to run in a Mercedes Sliver Arrow”, it would appear that the new Brawn Mercedes livery will be similar to last seasons McLaren. With that in mind I would love to see McLaren take the modern trend of retroism and go back to the original McLaren orange livery. The test cars ran in it and looked fantastic ! Someone have a picture of the test car from 2008?

    ooo yes! McLaren orange!!!

Oh 1991 – the year the F1 bug got slightly obsessive for me, for example I know there were slight changes to the Mclaren wing mirrors from Canada onwards, they changed to white after being Red for years. Also the picture of the Williams shows the livery for pre season and for the first two races in USA and Brazil as it had a white engine cover, which later turned yellow from San Marino onwards with Camel colours.

The Brabham colours seen here were only seen in the first two races of the year until the new car came out at San Marino, although it didn’t change their luck.

I loved the Jordan livery, like the Leyton House from 1989 it is very distinctive – The TicTac sponsorship on the Jordan was for the Italian Grand prix

I also thought the Tyrrell livery was quite strong having the Braun colours – It was good to see the team getting a major sponsor.

Unrelated to livery – how much like a big blue tank does that Ligier look!?
