BMW Sauber sold team aims to race next year

BMW Sauber sold
Only few hours after FIA confirmed Lotus as the 13th team on F1 grid news came out of BMW. The company announced that Qadbak Investments Ltd, a Swiss-based foundation which represents the interests of certain Middle East and European based families, has agreed to purchase the BMW Sauber F1 Team:
“A strong investor has therefore been found for the Hinwil-based team. Qadbak’s interest in the team will be represented by Lionel Fischer, a Swiss national. BMW wishes Qadbak and the Sauber Team every success for the 2010 season and beyond.”
The problem the Hinwil based team has at the moment is that they do not have the 2010 F1 entry. FIA has awarded BMW Sauber the ‘14th place’ in the Championship. But for the team to actually race they would either need the other 13 teams to agree to expand the grid to 28 cars or some of the privileged 13 would have to drop out… Nevertheless the team expects to be on the grid next year:
“We are pleased to confirm that the FIA has indicated that we may have a place in the 2010 Formula One World Championship. The team expects to line up on the grid for the first race of the 2010 season.”
Interesting times ahead…

I am glad that Sauber was saved. It would be a shame to see them go. Hopefully a way is found to keep them on the grid next year.

I really hope to see sauber next year. I’m living just a couple of miles away from the headquarter in hinwil. so it makes it kind of special to me…

Will BMW continue to play a role in F1 as an engine supplier, or will Sauber have to find a new supplier.
The number of suppliers is starting to get thin, especially if Renault pulls the plug. What will that leave…Ferrari, Toyota (who is also rumored to be considering a pull out), Mercedes, and Cosworth (returning after a long hiatus and probably not competitive).
Perhaps Honda will find this the opportunity to return.

BMW is pulling out and they have no plans to remain as an engine supplier. Sauber will have to find a new engine supplier. There has been some talk that they would use Ferrari power (as Sauber used to in the past), but this could have been rumours only.
As for Honda – It is never say never in F1 but not too long ago some senior Honda person said something along the lines that their F1 pull out was right thing to do and they have no plans to return in near future.
