Surprised by the Brawn racing results.:)
and there is definitely some problem with the McLaren team. I m not game for “hamilton” as the 2009 winner
kaushals last blog post..Is Schumi the best driver ever?
A lot!! The car is fast! And I still ask myself where did they find a shortcut to be quicker??? HEHE

well Ross Brawn says the car has been 15 months in making, does sound like a shortcut
i think ferrari have been holding back on their pace always finishing 2nd in the tests. Mclaren at the moment seem to be in trouble and i dont think they will feature as championship rivals.
its between ferrari, BMW and renault for me
i think force india will move up the field with mclaren chassis and engine and brawn gp will do ok

At McLaren I’m sure there’s a big problem within the car’s design or something doesn’t work as they thought, not just because I feel their speed is far from the 2008′s levels and the few trouble appeared during testing days at Portimao, Jerez and Kemble.
Lewis himself spotted that he doesn’t feel sure that the car is going on the proper way in terms of evolution, and if there’s something mistaken they won’t have a way to fix it. Facts show that the rear wing has been redone, curiously the team keeps testing a 2008 rear wing with 2009′s downforce configuration at Jerez… The problems may be around it then. At Barcelona they are testing with 2009′s rear wing, but they do not have the pace expected from a front team.
What I saw yesterday is a simple shakedown, there weren’t many flying laps, and almost all of the time on track Kovalainen was driving with low speeds, not happy with what I saw in McLaren, after a while I stand in front of their box garage in the main grandstand for a while, and there weren’t further exits despite they warmed the engine twice for a round of laps. Except it, sounds of a working milling tool or a grinding machine…

Seems there is an answer to what I heard in their garage

“The McLaren team has revealed a radical new aerodynamic modification on the MP4-24 in Barcelona, which could explain the team’s recent lack of pace in testing; the car, driven by Heikki Kovalainen on Monday, is sporting a new floor which is missing certain parts in an attempted bid to improve airflow to the rear end of the vehicle … ” GPUpdate.com

Interesting to know what is going on a Mclaren, are they got such huge problems that they are trying anything and everything to solve the issue or are they so confident that they are quietly sand bagging their times while working on solutions to aerodynamic designs to pull out even more pace when they let fly?
My vote is there is a problem, but whatever the problem is they are confident or fixing it as they are still testing other solutions to allow for a better balanced car and more speed if they are cutting holes in the floor and doing such things like that!
Who knows, and no one will know unless Mclaren say something, which is doubtful. We will all know once the cars roll out in Melbourne!
we only need to look back to 2004 season to see that even McLaren can get the things wrong … after 6 races they only had 5 points, the first podium came at the 10th race of the season (British GP). During the entire season they only scored 4 podiums (one of them was win).
but as you say, this all can also be a case of McLaren being very confident and making use of the testing while they can to try new things. but then – why would they waste so much of the limited testing mileage running with 2008 rear wing …
here are few interesting observations from James Allen posted on his blog:
and
Interesting comment by F1Wolf about the relative pace of the McLaren and the ferrari from a standing start. The overtaking within 300 yards suggests very strongly that the Ferrari launched with the added power from the KERS, but that the McLaren had launched without KERS.
Whether this means that McLaren have problems with the KERS is a moot point. All teams with the system will be using it at the start. There would seem to be little benefit in practicing starts without KERS if you intend to run the system at Melbourne, so perhaps McLaren does have issues with this.
As everyone else has said the early running with the old wing (which can only be set up to approximate the expected 2009 downforce, and cannot replicate the flow around the diffuser exit that the new wing will produce) certainly suggests that the team are struggling with an unforseen aerodynamic problem. The slow pace seems to go way beyond sandbagging. Historically McLaren have favoured ‘glory-runs’ with the car underweight, or otherwise not in legal race trim, in order to top the time sheets in testing. So it is probable that this is as fast as they can run the car at present. If they have a handle on their problem they could suddenly bounce back. But who is actually in overall charge of design at McLaren this year?

only want to clarify, these are not my comments, but observations by James Allen, link to his very interesting post is in my above comment
Just noticed my mistake. I will read Allen’s full comments; but thanks to you for reporting it here as I tend to avoid the mainstream journalism. I do suspect that the launch he observed was between a Ferrari running (their own system) KERS and a McLaren either without KERS or with a poorly operating system.
Traction off the line is fundamentally a c of g related thing, and historically again McLaren has had a disadvantage over the last few seasons as they have pushed the centre of mass further forward. But the described differential between the two starts seems to indicate something else at work.
