It was disapointing day for McLaren. Lewis Hamilton only just made it to Q2 but took no part in it following gearbox problems. I must say that the Q1 was one of the maddest qualifying sessions I remember with times dropping and positions changing till the very last moment. it will not be that easy for the others to come up with their own diffusers. it will take much more work then simply adding new diffuser to the back of the car. they will copy and paste at some point, but it may take some time …
Do you think Heidfeld using KERS made the difference in speed to Kubica? Cars did seem to be opposites in pace and cornering
I can’t tell, can’t even if tell how much they used KERS in qualifying. Everything was happening so fast
Forget all that. The big question is McLaren. What’s the problem. At least Ferrari held it together.
The problem is that even in McLaren they do not know what exactly is the problem. It is not the engine (as Brawn shows), it is the aero and lack of downforce. They can’t blame it on the diffuser only as there are other teams not using the controversial diffuser and still manage decent pace (Red Bull, BMW Sauber, Ferrari)… Will be interesting to see how long will it take to a team like McLaren to sort out their troubles. Back in 2004 they only became competitive after they introduced “B” car almost half way through the season …
To me all cars seemed smooth, the non-super-diffuse cars held it together rather well. They narrowed the gap on the diffuse cars. I’m still betting on Ferrari.
FIA released the post qualifying weights of all the cars – heaviest in Q3 was Glock, then Barrichello, Button and Trulli. All these four quite a bit heavier than the rest…Kubica was the lightest, and Vettel was 5 kg lighter than team mate Mark Webber

I think this will happen a lot quicker than we can imagine.
There is too much money involved.It is simple plastic stuff. They’ve already got airtunnels and mockups. Scuderia can probably redeploy within 48 hours.
If they have already plan B and diffuser version ready then perhaps it can happen rather quick. But there were some F1 technical people speaking on the track radio about this issue here in Melbourne and their view is that to add the special diffuser requires massive changes to the design of the car and totally new philosophy. It is rather complex issue and without testing it may not be that simple …
We will have to wait and see
Very early days yet, but if Brawn can get a head-start on the others in what is looking to be one of the closest seasons in history it may be too late for McLaren, even if they get it right within a couple of races.

The last three seasons HAVE been the closest in history. THAT was the Black Swan. It was like 9/11. it already happened.
From a strictly philosophical/statistical point of view – this season should be wild.
