2008 Brazilian F1 GP – Qualifying – Massa on pole, Hamilton P4

Massa on pole in his home race

Massa on pole in his home race

It is advantage Massa … Felipe Massa will start the final race of the 2008 Formula 1 season from the pole position, his 6th P1 of the year. Jarno Trulli will be his neighbour on the front row. Behind them Kimi Raikkonen P3 and Lewis Hamilton P4.

It does look good for Felipe Massa – pole position, potential Trulli train and then chance of Kimi Raikkonen’s help in managing the gap between himself and Hamilton. But the race is 73 laps long and P4 is still a title winning position for Lewis Hamilton… Interesting set up for the title deciding race we have …

2008 Brazilian F1 GP – Helmet specials for home drivers

Rubens Barrichello, 2008 Brazilian GP

Rubens Barrichello, 2008 Brazilian GP

David Coulthard came to Brazil with differently looking car, the home drivers Nelson Piquet and Rubens Barrichello are sporting different look helmets.

Nelson Piquet’s 2008 Brazilian GP helmet special includes the Brazilian national flag, design that obviously celebrates first home Formula 1 race for Piquet.

Rubens Barrichello’s 2008 Brazilian GP helmet special design honours a man who gave him his first ever racing helmet – Barrichellos family friend Ingo Hoffman. Hoffman is a Brazilian Stock Car racing legend and also raced for Fittipaldi F1 team back in 1976 and 1977.

Both Piquet and Barrichello probably hope that unlike in Coulthard’s case their special Brazilian GP designs will not also mark the final Formula 1 races of their careers …

2008 Brazilian F1 GP – Friday Practice

Fernando Alonso, fastest in Brazil on Friday

Fernando Alonso, fastest in Brazil on Friday

The fastest time of the day on the mostly damp track in Brazil went to Fernando Alonso who topped the time sheets in the second free practice. Felipe Massa seems to have the upper hand over hist title rival Lewis Hamilton so far. Massa was quickest in FP1 and second fastest in FP2. Lewis Hamilton ended FP1 right behind Massa but managed only 9th in FP2. But as it is always the case on Fridays it is very hard to read into these times. One should also remember that Lewis Hamilton does not have to go for the win in this race and so his practice program can be more conservative. What can worry Hamilton however are the numerous tyre lock ups he suffered on Sunday. Flatspotting his tyres would not be a good idea in the race on Sunday…

2008 Brazilian F1 GP – Weather forecast – Damp weekend ahead

It looks like we may have the added excitement of wet or at least damp weekend for the 2008 Formula 1 season finale. The reports from Interlagos say that with only about an hour to go to the Free Practice 1 the track is currently damp and showers are forecasted for the all day. The temperatures are expected to remain cool with high of about 18 degrees. Saturday should be warmer but with threats of thunderstorms followed by expected light rain on Sunday.

2008 Brazilian F1 GP – Special livery for David Coulthard

Wings for Life Red Bull Livery Brazil 2008

Wings for Life Red Bull Livery Brazil 2008

David Coulthard’s Red Bull will sport a distinct white livery in the support of Wings for Life charity. This is not the first time Red Bull runs a special livery for charitable purpose. The difference between 2008 Brazilian GP and 2007 British GP however is that Red Bull will run the special livery also in the race and only on one car.

One team running each car with different livery is something normally not allowed in Formula 1. However the fact that this is David Coulthard’s last Formula 1 race and this time (unlike in BAR case back in 1999) it is not for commercial but for charitable purposes all the team agreed to allow Red Bull to have 2 very differently looking cars on the grid.

Check the gallery inside this post for more photos of te Wings for Life livery David Coulthard will run this weekend in Brazil.

2008 F1 Prediction Game – Round 18 – Brazilian GP

And this is it. The final round of the 2008 F1 Prediction Game is just around corner. It does look now that the outcome of the game depends quite a bit on who will be the F1 champion. Most of the pre season votes went to Kimi Raikkonen, those votes are now worthless :-) . There were some for Hamilton and some for Massa, those are still potentially worth 25 points … So, let’s go to the final:

So place your predictions as usual in the comments below this post:
- Top eight finishers in the race
- Pole position
- Fastest lap

The summary of the rules and current standings – click here
Round 17 results – click here.

Do not forget – the predictions must be placed before the qualifying starts. Better do not leave it to the very last moment ! And remeber the race is in Brazil, the qualifying starts at 2pm local time on Saturday, race at 3pm local time on Sunday. That is midnight on Saturday and 1am on Monday morning in Hong Kong, and if I calculate right that also means 4pm Saturday, 5pm Sunday GMT.

2008 Brazilian Formula 1 GP – Wolf’s Race Preview

Interlagos

Interlagos

And here comes the last race and the last race preview of the 2008 Formula 1 season. The honour to host the season finale goes again to Brazilian Grand Prix. And same as was the case in previous 2 seasons the result of the final race will decide the championships. Worth mentioning is that with the exception of the Super Aguri guys all the drivers that started the 2008 season back in Melbourne will be on the grid with the same teams in Sao Paulo. I do not really remember when was the last time no driver got fired or replaced during the F1 season …

The main attention will of course be on the Hamilton vs Massa title fight. Lewis Hamilton may be leading the championship race by 7 points but as last year proved that may not mean much. And after the unpredictable season we have had so far with all the surprising results and all the points and races thrown away by both Hamilton and Massa I would not take anything for certain.
