Future not clear for Chinese Grand Prix
This may be bad news for Bernie Ecclestone and good news for promoters of the other Formula 1 races. Organizers of Chinese GP are evaluating the feasibility of hosting the race ahead of expiry of their contract. Shanghai Grand Prix was first time hosted in 2004 and the organizers have two more races to go before the original contract runs out in 2010.
One would think that money does not matter in country like China. But things change … There is a chance that the Chinese GP may be dropped.
Qiu Weichang, deputy director of the Shanghai Administration of Sports:
“We’re doing the assessment. By next year we should be able to give you an answer. We want to create a win-win situation, for our side and for Bernie (Ecclestone) and the F1 organisers as well. If this is something we can do, and our cooperation is very happy and smooth, we will consider it.
Of course we would like at least to break even. But there are two factors, one is the assessment the other part is the win-win situation that we can create.”
I wonder if this news is what it is – simple announcement that the organizers have to do some math before renewing the contract. Or is this is an opening gambit in the game the Chinese organizers are ready to play with Bernie Ecclestone ?
China dropping the race would send a signal to all other free spending countries that the benefits of hosting the race do not really outweigh the cost associated with it. I am not sure that Ecclestone would be too eager to see that happening.
Shanghai already ditched the MotoGP race that pretty much nobody went to see.
