When BMW Sauber took their latest creation to the track in Barcelona many (including BMW Sauber test driver Christian Klien) branded it the ugliest F1 car ever. Well, 750mg Erythromycin And Penicillin, Erythromycin And Penicillin us, the car sure ain't any beauty but ugliest ever .

I checked out several f1 forums to see what are the other cars often considered the worst ever, Erythromycin And Penicillin overseas. 10mg Erythromycin And Penicillin, I think thin the latest BMW Sauber is still way too beautiful if compared to some of these :-) :

I guess it comes down to opinion but all of those with the exception of the Brabham F2 are beautiful. I am pretty sure the front wings were added for tighter tracks like Monaco.
Seriously the Tyrell P34 and Arrows A2 are masterpieces.

  3. Well, firstly I don’t consider all of the above cars ugly, especially the Tyrrell P34 and the Arrows A2 – they are unique and innovative.

Secondly, the difference between these cars and the 2009 cars is that all of the above examples were driven by innovation and to try and gain a technical advantage. The 2009 cars are forced to look like they do, which in my book makes them a lot uglier!

I would like to do a loud EHEM to make me notice :-)

These older cars (with exception of the latest cars seen in the post, Williams 2004 and BMW-Sauber 2006) are not really mistaken, they’re functional cars. But the that times bring crazy inventions and strange innovations which ever have been well studied. Earlier it wasn’t possible to afford such investigations like we can see nowadays with the wind flow in wind tunnels and using super-computers, technically was impossible to demonstrate how currently would the ideas really work on the track. The principles were there, written in mathematical expressions and were used complicated physic’s calculations to determinate somehow the downforce.
During 60’s, 70’s and the early 80’s, engineers couldn’t know how these “pre-historical ” aero packages did really work, and they fitted the first piece of junk that was thought (they weren’t very aero DYNAMIC, just serious walls made of sheet and fibers, and I imagine they were developed by great experts!!).
The wings were designed bigger and bigger, and side skirts were rising and rising, because it was known that in this way cars will stick to the ground. But therefore the teams needed to have monster motors to make these upside-down airplanes move faster. So, what’s wrong here??? The factor of downforce-power was rising, but very unbalanced with what really was needed, it was almost sick adding that huge wings when they just did to slow down the car. Or create the motors with bigger torque. The cars were heavy, too much heavy for being agile enough as the cars which exist nowadays, and stop that cars in high speed for sure was a great pursuit for the drivers, and thanks to this enormous downforce range they managed to turn the cars.

Nowadays, the aerodynamical studies in F1 or any motorsports turned very accurate, it’s possible to determinate efficient solutions and almost perfect ways to cut the air in the best way to create the exact downforce for the car and the specific tracks. These cars last years have been better than ever before, and if the older inventions as side skirts, fans or flat bottomed chassis were still allowed maybe they wouldn’t be that fast, but I guess that all those ideas would evolve getting much more good season after season, so they could be pretty well developed in our current days. Anyway, I still think that these older car pictures have some glamour on them :-) The cars were created by myths and driven by heroes from other times. But for sure I like more the look from the cars which we will have the upcoming season!! HAHA I think they look unusual, but they look not bad. I felt the BMW-Sauber on track very fast for now, and that seems to be very exciting while we’re waiting all the teams to uncover their new cars and let us see!!

I totally agree that ugly or beautiful is very much matter of taste or opinion or taste. There sure is something special about the cars above but the same can be and perhaps will be said one day about the F1 class 2009 F1 cars. There are still several months to go before the teams roll out their (almost) definitve versions of new cars, they may look much better than the already famous Nov 2008 Barcelona type BMW Sauber :-)

but as the same Christian Klien who branded the new BMW car the ugliest ever said – racing cars do not have to beautiful :-)

I got an official t-shirt and very proud of it :-) HAHA But certainly, it wasn’t good enough despite such fantasic idea, somehow they didn’t get what they expected in their gamble for 2004 title, pity.

those days that Williams was still rather close to the frint end of the grid , right ?

        • KotenokNo Gravatar says:

Well, they didn’t succeed much but at the end were 4th in the constructors table. Much better than did this year :-( Oh!! So cruel you’re!!! HAHAHA Past were these days when they were a leading team and having big chances to win championships. But I consider that this front wing did show their big hopes and investment to socceed, pity, they didn’t and McLaren finished 2nd in front of them.

The interesting part for me personally, is all but the “walrus” and the 6 wheel Tyrell have been forgotten. And I think that says a lot. The combination of wide front wing and short rear wing is AWFUL. Someone messed this up and destroyed the most beautiful race cars on the planet.
