Keisuke Kunimoto (Japan) took a surprise victory in the Windsor Arch Formula 3 Macau Grand Prix.

Kunimoto, making his first appearance in Macau, got away better than pole position man Edoardo Mortara from second spot on the grid – and managed to fight off his rival all the way down to Lisboa Bend.

Behind the leading duo Roberto Streit collided with Sam Bird as he tried to defend the position. Streit hit the barriers on the right hand side of the track before spinning across the circuit. The flying wheel just missed him on landing, scary scary moment …

The Safety Car came out but at the restart on lap three Kunimoto maintained his lead. Mortara then locked up at Lisboa bend on lap four allowing Daniel Campos and Jaime Alguersuari to pass him. Mortara later took the third back from Campos and then moved up to second after Alguersuari had to serve his drive through penalty for jumping the start.

Another Safety Car period came on lap eight following Robert Merhi’s heavy crash at R Bend. At the restart on lap 10, Kunimoto managed to edge clear. At the same time Mortara hit the wall in the hilly section and slightly damaged his car. He was able to continue and close the gap to Kunimoto but he could not get close enough to attack. Mortara finished second 1.7 seconds behind the Japanese driver. Brendon Hartley finished third after 3rd ad 4th car crashed out with only 2 laps to go.

Keisuke Kunimoto:

“I cannot believe this result, but my TOM’S team is the best in the world and that is why I could get on top of the podium.”

More from Macau GP to come in next few days.
