Mosley is loosing the plot – FIA to go ahead with standard engine supplier tender

The standard engine supply idea did not get much support from the car manufacturers involved in Formula 1. Several of them even suggested that such a rule may result in some manufacturers leaving the sport. Loosing manufacturers would almost automaticaly mean loosing teams – the very development the cost cutting is supposed to prevent from happening.

Mosley however does not seem to care what the manufacturers think. He dropped a bombshell today with the announcement that the FIA is to open the tender process for a standard engine in Formula 1 from 2010.

“The FIA will today open the tender process for the appointment of a third party supplier of engines and transmission systems to be used by competitors in the 2010, 2011 and 2012 FIA Formula One World Championship. The tender summary and requirements will be published on the FIA website shortly.”

To whom are FIA and Mosley especially actually willing to listen ?

FIA announced further details on standardised engine idea:


“The FIA intends to amend the regulations to require all F1 competitors to use a standardised engine. The provider will set out a detailed design and will either provide engines in full working order or the detailed designs to allow competitors to build their own standardised engine. Where competitors choose to build all or part of their standardized engine, the appointed provider will assist the FIA in ensuring all engines and parts have been built in accordance with the appropriate design and conforms to a performance output in a prescribed range.”

    I can’t believe Max went ahead with this. If there is one thing that might either result in a breakaway league or Max’s resignation, it’s this.

      The additional explanation provided by FIA made the whole idea look a bit less bad, but it is bad nevertheless … The manufacturers who want to keep building their engines will not get fooled by being allowed to build carbon copy of engines developed by someone else …

    We already have the MES ECU and Bridgestone which won the race for being unique F1 tyre provider, a big step of standardization and lower costs to F1 teams, but I think the engine standardization is a step too far, the engines already are limited by several bounds, being not free to build whatever you wish and at the same time doing that the pursuit of bettering them costs lots of money, but not that much as a continuous development.

    What else will be Mr. Mosley? He saved his head some months ago hiding in the background, and now his cocky character raises again?! If I could tell my feelings of the teams about those hints, I would say that if the whole of the FOTA members knew that before, they chose to ban Mosley from the FIA. Just for securing their wealth of the F1 programs.

    No, I wouldn’t agree to that suggestions for the 2010, there could be better ways to lower costs in F1.

    I think Mr.Mosley and his FIA cronies have lost the plot all together. Why don’t we just drop the name Formula One and call it A1GP…..because that is what the moronic fools are doing to F1. The next thing they’ll start doing is standardising the chassis and aero package. Maybe a break away series will be good for the fans and the sport. Has Bernie Ecclestone released a statement yet? Wait till it hits his pocket……….

    Without fully understanding the plan, on the surface it would seem to go against everything that F1 was built on. How does F1 differentiate itself from Indy/Cart if they use spec engines?

    I would love to hear the teams (most notable Ferrari’s) response to this.
