2008 Chinese F1 GP – Friday Practice

Looked like exciting morning in Shanghai with quite some action on the track. Hamilton practiced some overtaking manuevres on Massa, Nelson Piquet jr tried to do “Hamilton” at the pit lane entry gravel trap while Bouradais explored the gravel at different part of the track. The top four places were occupied by McLarens and Ferraris with Hamilton setting the fastest time of the session ahead of Massa. Kubica and Alonso were best of the rest.

Friday Practice 1 Times:

1. L. Hamilton – McLaren – 1:35.630
2. F. Massa – Ferrari – 1:36.020
3. K. Räikkönen – Ferrari – 1:36.052

19. A. Sutil – Force India – 1:38.285
20. G. Fisichella – Force India – 1:38.479

In the afternoon practice Lewis Hamilton was gain the quickest guy on track, the only driver with time below 1:36. Behind Hamilton lined up Renaults of Fernando Alonso and Nelson Piquet. The Renault guys are serious about being quick. Ferrari drivers were about 7 tenths slower than Hamilton’s fastest lap, split by Sebastien Bourdais who continued exploring the gravel traps around the track until he beached his Toro Rosso in one of them :-) . Hondas did not disappoint again …

My eyes may have deserted me today, but it did look like some teams were today running for a while with and for a while without the shark fin engine covers. I think I spotted this phenomenon on Toyota, Honda and Ferrari.
