2008 F1 Qualifying – Team mates head to head statistics

Qualifying performance is one of the important benchmarks used to evaluate relative performance of team mates. Here is an overview of qualifying results in 2008 Formula 1 season. The table displays the results as achieved in qualifying, not the final position on the starting grid – grid penalties are not reflected in this table. I included this table also in the 2008 season stats.

Looking at Renault and Toyota and vast difference in the positions shows just how far off the #2 drivers are. My quick math has Alonzo averaging 8 positions better than Piquet and Trulli averaging 4 positions better than Glock.

How do these guys keep their seats?

What stands out in this chart is the differences in drivers on Renault, BMW-Sauber, and Toyota. Especially at Renault Alonso can expect no help from Piquet Jr.

in Toytota and Renault cases at least the weaker qualifier is a rookie (well Glock is almost rookie) … But what about Red Bull and BWM Sauber …
