2008 Canadian F1 GP – Race day pictures and sounds and some drunk Kubica fans

Following the troubles with the track on Saturday parts of the track were resurfaced the night before the race. And it was not only the hairpin but also the first chicane. I took these few photos less than an hour before the race start … Bizzare …

Even the babes with flags had to navigate through the road works …

The track apparently passed the inspection and the program went on … Snowbirds flew in:

Groundhogs watched:

Time for Canadian anthem:

And the cars can line up for formation lap:

And the start:

Hamilton was running away with the race until Sutil lost it and safety car joined the show:

The pitlane opened, half of the grid rushed in and somehow Raikkonen and Kubica jumped ahead of Hamilton. Not sure what Hamilton was thinking but the best he could come up with in that situation was to ram it into the back of red light observing Raikkonen’s Ferrari …

Kubica had quite some support in Montreal and this is the reaction of the crowd when he kept the lead from Heidfeld after his final pit stop.

Behind Kubica all sorts of things were happening, like Kovalainen and Vettel fighting it out:

… and this is how close the the cars came to the wall …

All the track repairs helped a bit but the marbles came back anyway:

The top three pulled away from the rest (and from each other) and drove safely to the checkered flag. Race win for Kubica, second for Heidfeld, third for Coulthard:

BMW Sauber celebrated their first win (and 1-2 finish) …

… and David Coulthard his 62nd career podium …

And the Polish fans celebrated Robert Kubica

P.S. If you wonder why the Canadian GP often turns out to be a gamble these directions to the track may explain it:

I couldn’t have told the story better than that. Those Polish fans were awesome. Hope their flight wasn’t too early.
Anyway, great grand prix, I’ll be there next year again. This time either the hairpin or where you were.
