Briatore Hints At Alonso’s Return To Renault

After Toyota’s confirmation of Timo Glock there aren’t too many options left for Fernando Alonso. Red Bull rumours still fly around, Toro Rosso’s Franz Tost being the latest one to say Alonso is talking to Red Bull. But Red Bull has 2 drivers with contract and so the only suitable team with an empty seat is Renault.

Today on Italian radio Flavio Briatore hinted the talks are going on and deal may be concluded this week:

“Renault will definitely have different drivers next year. There is a 60 per cent chance Alonso will be with us.”

“We have an advantage because we know him. Between today and the day after tomorrow it will be decided. When you marry, split up and get back together it is not easy. We and he have the intention of finding a solution. This week will be decisive for the marriage. He can choose and he knows us. Last year he chose McLaren and made a mistake. At McLaren he arrived as the world champion and he was put in competition against a rookie driver. That way the relationship inside a team is put in danger. You can’t have two primadonnas inside a team. You need to get behind one of the drivers.”

Not sure whether it was just a slip of a tongue, but by saying “Renault will definitely have different drivers next year” he also suggests that neither Kovalainen nor Fisichella will stay on. At this situation I would not bet against the expected move to McLaren for Kovalainen. For Fisichella the only hope would be Super Aguri or Team India, but none of them looks very likely…

  1. ‘Between today and the day after it will be settled’ well still no news but I think the signs are ominous that he will be joining Renault. I don’t think it was a slip of the tongue – he knew his comments would be picked up and with the amount of speculation about this now, it seems it’s going to happen. We need confirmation asap.

some sources say 2 weeks now, some say Toyota and Red Bull are still in the hunt for him … may still take a while, or not :-)

  3. I can’t see it dragging on that long, surely? and if he goes to Red Bull or Toyota I would be amazed. Very surprised it still hasn’t happened – although maybe he’s on holiday?!
