One of the best race fights since the famous Arnoux vs Villeneuve 1979 fights in Jerez. Ok, may be I am overrating this, but hey, we don’t get to see action like this anymore… Watch it together with the excited Japanese commentators…

Before the season started I had a ‘2007 Drivers Champion’ poll on this site. This is how the readers voted:

It should be easier to recall the past than to predict the future, check out the $100 Competition and post your guess too.
The competition runs till October 7, the day of the 2007 Chinese Grand Prix.

What a race it was… As usual, throw in the rain and expect unexpected. The race started behind the safety car, as the track conditions were deemed too dangerous. One only had to see some of the on board footage to understand why…
To make things even more confusing FIA requested teams to start the race on extreme wet tyres, with black flags awaiting those who would not follow. Apparently the rule came out only at 12:15, 15 minutes before the race start. FIA sent the information by email. Ferrari’s Stefano Domenicali only received the email by 1:37 … Ferraris started the race on intermediates… Why on Earth did they choose to do that in those freaking wet conditions is mystery to me. With or without FIAs rule the extreme wets were sure the only way to go.
Anyway, without anyone watching the race knowing what was going on, both Ferraris, Massa first, Raikkonen after him made pit stops behind the safety car and were relegated from 3rd and 4th to back of the pack. With safety still cruising, both of them had to sit still at the back without being able to recover lost track positions.

After some weather worries the qualifying had taken part and weather permitted all 3 sessions. The track was pretty much in the clouds at some parts especially during the Q1. Some rain kept falling all the time. Track conditions seemed to be improving for a while, with best around half the way through the Q2.
Q1 was not too good to the “home” teams and drivers. Yamamoto, Sato, Davidson (Super Aguri), Barrichello (Honda), Wurz (Williams-Toyota) were all eliminated. Ralf Schumacher made it to Q2, but his collisions with Yamamoto wrecked his car and ended his day. However the uncertainty about the weather caused non stop action during the race, with all the cars trying improve their times all the time, just in case the weather does not permit the qualifying to continue.

After several delays due to poor visibility, the morning practice finally went ahead only to be abandoned after 4 minutes due to heavy rain. There were only 3 drivers who managed at least 1 flying lap.
Alex Wurz was fastest on a 1:32.746, two seconds ahead of Nico Rosberg and 3.4 seconds ahead of Trulli. The teams will have to work with whatever data they collected on Friday. Not exactly the best way going into the qualifying and race on a brand new track.
Further rain in Fuji F1 track area is predicted for the Japanese F1 weekend.

FIA has provisionally approved Singapore’s 5.067km street track. The last big outstanding decision is whether the race will be held as a night race as planned or not.
