Trend Of The Week – Ex F1 Drivers Hitting Out At The Current Ones

First Nigel Mansell comes slamming Jenson Button:

“Jenson should have won more races, he has under-performed and that is down to him,” Mansell told the BBC.
“He had the opportunity and he didn’t take it; there won’t be any more.”

Next Eddie Irvine picked on the McLaren duo:

“The disrespect Lewis Hamilton showed to Ron Dennis was quite unbelievable in my opinion,” Irvine told Virgin Media.
“Lewis is playing a particularly polished and clever game when it comes to appearing cleaner-than-clean to the media but his arrogance is starting to come out now.
“Success is starting to go to his head and, whilst I challenge any man on the planet in his position not let it do so, the way both he and Alonso are behaving is beyond childish – and the way he behaved in Hungary is beyond belief.”

He also saved some words for Alonso:

“As for Alonso, a two-time World Champion should have more brains than he does,” he continued.
“To block Lewis like that in qualifying was one of the most stupid things I’ve ever seen and it reminded me of Michael Schumacher’s move on Jacques Villeneuve at Jerez in 1997.
“I can’t condone cheating, but if you must do it, there’s got to be a subtler way!”

And something for both of them:

“Personally, I’d take both of them out of their cars for a couple of races to teach them a lesson.”

I pretty much agree with what Irvine had to say and that does not need much comment. As for Nigel Mansell’s words, I am not really sure what opportunity he had in mind. The only time Button had a good car, was 2004 BAR. Unfortunatelly that was also a year of dominant Ferrari … But can probably agree with his view on Button’s future. An odd race win here and there may be possible … But unless Honda builds a winner of a car, he does not stand much chance of winning any titles … I do not see McLaren, Ferrari, BMW or Renault hiring him, and looks to me that the champions in near future will come from these teams only … Move to other teams would not make much sense, so it is either a title with Honda or no title at all…

Mansel had some choice comments about Hamilton as well, boiled down to: “he looks better than he is because he’s in the best car and has gotten more testing than drivers in past…”
