Formula 1 –Driver Rumours 2008 – Part 5

I had no intention for this to become a series, but the rumours simply would not go away. And they will not until the whole grid is set.

Pedro de la Rosa was not confirmed as Prodrive driver in Istanbul. That may have something to do with the fact, that even McLaren was not yet confirmed as a partner for Prodrive. They have 2 other options (that is what they say). It will not be Honda, it will not be Red Bull, I doubt it would be Toyota, that would leave only Renault and BMW to consider. That would open more driver movement speculations, it looks like pretty much it is going to be McLaren and the talk of other 2 options is just a PR stunt from Dave Richards.

It is said that nothing happens until McLaren duo is sorted out, but that may not be the case.

As BMW already confirmed their line up, the only open option for Alonso is Renault or Ferrari as this Spanish blog suggests(Google can translate the page). Renault may be announcing their line up sooner than later and that may end any Alonso speculations – except the one talking about Nando taking a year sabbatical leave or retiring. One day he is happy in McLaren, another day unhappy, so who knows what mind games he is playing (or is it media playing mind games with Alonso ?).

In Renault it does not look good for Fisichella. He already holds a record of most team changes among the current F1 drivers, and he may have to start to get ready for the next move. After shabby beginning Kovalainen is finding his footing in Renault, it would be stupid from Flavio to keep Fisi in Heikki’s expense. And Piquet Jr. is probably too much of talent to be allowed to leave the camp if he can’t make the step up to race seat. Spanish newspaper Diario As already claims that Giancarlo Fisichella will be dropped, making way for Nelson Piquet Jr to debut alongside Heikki Kovalainen. And this should be announced in Monza in 2 weeks time. Bad for Fisi.

There is a talk already about Fisi joining Williams, as he almost did back in 2005. But there are few more eyeing that seat – Liuzzi, Sato rumours also circulated, Karthikeyan hopes for that too. That would mean someone from Williams would have to go. Rosberg however is not for sale (at least that is what Frank Williams says) and I think Wurz will be offloaded only if someone better or some potential talent comes along. But …

The Bild a.m. Sonntag says, that if Alonso does decide to leave McLaren at the end, he will be replaced by Nico Rosberg giving Frank Williams useful pile of cash …

The other name that never goes off the rumour radar is Ralf Schumacher. He tried to talk to Toro Rosso, but that game is over now with their line up confirmed already. The qualifying performance in Turkey did not do him any favours. There are less and less people believing he will be in F1 next year. And on top of it, there are whispers already that GP2 star and former Jordan driver Timo Glock has been signed by Toyota…
