As expected, Scott Speed’s career in Toro Rosso is over. Sebastian Vettel will take over from Hungarian GP for the rest of the season, after BMW released him. Timo Glock will take over Vettel’s duties at BMW. What other rumours will prove to be true?

It is going from bad to worse this year for the former Prost F1 driver and F3000 Champion (well he was stripped off the title after his cannabis incident). Only a week after crashing with Mika Salo in the ALMS race at Mid-Ohio (videos inside the article) and following sacking from the Petersen Motorsports/White Lightning team (after pressure from Ferrari allegedly) Tomas Enge crashed again. This time at 24 hour FIA GT race at Spa in the colors of Scuderia Ecosse. He totally wrecked his Ferrari 430 after 240 km/h smash into the barriers. Another team, another crash, another wrecked car…

Last week I made a post on Jacques Villeneuve. The mention of him and Le Mans reminded me of the 1971 movie with Steeve McQueen. It has been quite a few years since I watched that. So with no F1 or MotoGP race on calendar this weekend I’d picked up the DVD and did the re-run on my home cinema. This movie was made about 30 years before CGI turned every action flick into anime.

Jean Todt is very obviously very upset man. Two days after the FIA decided not to punish the guilty party, Todt went public with his view of the events on the Ferrari website. Thing are going to get dirty…
Here is the full text:
“I am bitter about it: what happened yesterday is serious. On the one hand a verdict of guilt was handed down and on the other, no sanctions were imposed. I cannot understand it. During yesterday’s meeting, the McLaren bosses, with no exceptions, admitted that their chief designer had obtained since back in March, prior to the Australian GP, documents from Nigel Stepney.

The FIA published the provisional race calendar for 2008. It looks like business as usual at the beginning of the season. Opening race in Australia followed by Malaysia, Bahrain and Spain. Then there is new slot for Turkey in May, instead of their usual August date. France still remains on the calendar with Magny Cours set to feature again. The late August date vacated by Turkey went to Valencia for the European GP. US GP is missing. The final fly away part of the season will kick off in Singapore. Last race of 2008 season is planned for November 02 in Brazil.
Updated on September 18, 2008 (Belgian GP switched the date with Italy, and Japanese GP switched the date with China.

The FIA World Motor Sports Council decided not to penalize McLaren.
The full FIA statement read: “An extraordinary meeting of the World Motor Sport Council was held in Paris on 26 July, 2007. The following decision was taken:“The WMSC is satisfied that Vodafone McLaren Mercedes was in possession of confidential Ferrari information and is therefore in breach of article 151c of the International Sporting Code. However, there is insufficient evidence that this information was used in such a way as to interfere improperly with the FIA Formula One World Championship. We therefore impose no penalty.
“But if it is found in the future that the Ferrari information has been used to the detriment of the championship, we reserve the right to invite Vodafone McLaren Mercedes back in front of the WMSC where it will face the possibility of exclusion from not only the 2007 championship but also the 2008 championship.
“The WMSC will also invite Mr Stepney and Mr Coughlan to show reason why they should not be banned from international motor sport for a lengthy period and the WMSC has delegated authority to deal with this matter to the legal department of the FIA.”
What does this mean?

This weekend a year ago we saw the last of Jacques Villeneuve in Formula 1. The German Grand Prix in Hockenheim on July 30, 2006 was his last race. He crashed out and it did not take long for BMW Sauber to sack him. It did not as much of a surprise as BMW seemed to be looking for a way to get rid of him since the moment they took over Sauber operation. He was not the most loved guy on the grid but he was a world champion and he made his mark on F1. His F1 career is well documented, so all I do here is very brief recap.
