Formula 1 - US GP Preview (with Videos)

We did not have enough time to discuss and review properly all that happened on Sunday in Montreal and here comes United States GP in Indianapolis.

It seems like this race was in the calendar for quite some time. Formula 1 has quite some history in the US.
However there was long break between 1992 and 1999 with no race being held in the States before the circus found its US home in Indianapolis Motor Speedway. This is an interesting track. Part of it is the classic high speed American oval track (in clockwise direction however) with tricky walls never too far. Then there is the infield section with several corners. This combination makes the car set up a bit tricky compromise. See the video of the lap with Michael Schumacher.
This is not the easiest track to race on. Last year we had only 9 finishers with 7 cars out after first 2 corners. It also was the last F1 race for Juan Pablo Montoya. See video:
Historically this track suits Ferrari cars. However last 2 years do not give clear picture and may be a bit deceiving. In 2005 there was the famous Michelin trouble with tyres that were unable to last the race distance. All Michelin runners withdrew and Ferraris only competed with then the backmarkers Jordan and Minardi. As a consequence in 2006 Michelin brought in rather conservative tyres that were no match for Bridgestones and Ferrari had more less no other real competition except their own reliability. This year the tyres are same for everybody and Ferrari will face tough competition from McLaren and BMW at least. Safety car is also quite common sight on this track, so anything can happen here, even Minardi scored a point here in 2004 … It will be interesting to see how the McLaren drivers cope with this track. Hamilton never raced here (as was the case in few other track this year) and Alonso has yet to finish on podium on this track.

Should be another action-packed race.
I’m sure Hamilton’s first win has attracted a few fair-weather fans to this event.
