It was interesting weekend in Monaco. What a pity that the rain that mixed up the free practice on Saturday did not last till the qualifying session …
The domination of McLarens did not come as a big surprise. The test in Paul Ricard indicated that the silver cars are best suited for this tight track. But the gap between them and Ferrari was a bit bigger than expected. The case might be that Massa settled for comfortable 3rd knowing that he has no chance challenging the McLarens.

Looking at results in past 10 years, one must say, this is not most favourite track for Ferrari. They only won 3 times with last win in 2001 (1-2 finish though). McLaren recorded 4 wins here, 2 of them courtesy of David Coulthard. DC also gave Red Bull their first podium last year in Monaco. Two wins went to Renault (Trulli, Alonso) and one to Williams-BMW (Montoya). Lewis Hamilton won here last year in GP2.

After 2 days of testing on Monaco style track layout drivers switched to Montreal design. This track seems to be best suited to Ferrari as Kimi Raikkonen drove fastest laps on both days. McLaren did not perform as well as during first 2 days at Paul Ricard. It looks like the Monaco track will suit McLaren better than Montreal. It also looks like Hamilton suits the car better than Pedro de la Rosa … Renaults did good on both days with Kovalainen 3rd on May 17 and Fisichella 2nd on May 18. Honda was slow on both days and it did not matter which one of their 3 drivers was behind the wheel. But really not sure what to make of all these times, especially when you see Scott Speed clocking 2nd fastets time on one day, and then his team mate being slowest the next day …

The times of the second day of testing are probably more accurate display of the current form. McLaren and Ferrari evenly matched, then a bit of a gap, and then 6 cars without too much between them. Yesterday saw a return of Sebastien Bourdais. Being only a second slower than Wurz, Schumacher and Barrichello in a better cars and loads of experience in F1 cars - well that is not bad at all. Nothing has been confirmed, everything has been denied, but I think, that Bourdais in F1 in 2008 is more less a sure thing.

All the teams are back to work at the Paul Ricard test track. The Monaco style track configuration is used this week as the teams prepare for next weekend race.
James Rossiter ran for Super Aguri for the first time after his switch from Honda. Reanult, Honda, Spyker and BMW also used their test drivers yesterday. For the record Lewis Hamilton clocked the fastest lap.

Last week was a race week, finally … But several interesting things happened before that. First we had Valencia joining the 2008 race calendar. One would expect F1 to appear on the existing race track, but Bernie went for the street race. Not even a day later a news arrived from Singapore about the Lion City joining in as well in 2008, and guess what, street race again, potentially night one. To sum up all the announcements, Barcelona renewed the contract for Spanish GP till 2016. Let’s hope they actually do something to the track to make the excitement last beyond the first corner …
Good news for some is bad news for others.
